Photography Course Levels Explained
No matter what your photography level is, or what your preferred photography style is, we have a photographic course, workshop, online class, outdoor classroom or holiday that will suit your digital photographic needs. From a beginner, who has just purchased a new camera to a more experienced shooter, we have something for everyone.
All DPS photography courses, offsite location shoots and online classes are broken down into levels and categories. Find out which one suits you.
LEVEL 1 Courses
These courses are short, part time photography courses that take place at DPS HQ in Dublin City Centre, or via our online campus. They are designed to get you up to speed, not just with your camera, but with the principals of photography. They cover everything from complete basics, to more advanced concepts. Our level 1 courses form the back bone for all future learning in photography. They do this by helping you get the basics in place, by dispelling myths, by busting jargon and getting you comfortable with the manual side of your camera. As we say here at Dublin Photography School, “you can’t learn to drive just by reading the rules of the road”.
Level: Complete beginners, experienced novices who may be struggling to get out of automatic, self taught photographers looking to formalise their photography knowledge and photographers returning after a long break.
Course Frequency : Our start dates and frequency will depend on the time of the the year. Below is an indication of how often they run.
7 week level 1 (includes two location shoots) – six start dates a year
1 day level 1 – one course a month
4 week online level 1 – one course every two months

LEVEL 2 Courses
These courses are short, part time photography courses that take place at DPS HQ in Dublin City Centre, or via our online campus. The courses will helpp you move beyond the basics and look deeper into the fine tuning of your camera. They are ideal for anyone looking to get a deeper understanding of the correct metering and focus modes, the benefits of shutter and aperture priority and why it is better to shoot RAW over JPEG. You will become a more confident shooter by learning the right techniques for different situations. Level 2 courses follow directly on from our level 1 courses.
Level: Anyone who has completed our 7 week or 1 day level 1 course or anyone who is comfortable in the manual side of their camera.
Course Frequency : Our start dates and frequency will depend on the time of the the year. Below is an indication of how often they run.
5 week level 2 (includes two location shoots) – three start dates a year
4 week Visual Story Telling (level 1 & 2) – two course a year
4 week online level 2 – one course every three months

4-5-7 Week Classroom Based Photography Courses
These are short, part time evening photography courses that take place one night a week at DPS HQ in Dublin City Centre, or via our online campus. Our 5 and 7 week courses include two location shoots.

Online Interactive Photography Courses
Are you looking to do an online photography course or classroom session? Are you working from home? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. You can now take a photography course via our online campus from the safety and comfort of your own home, and no matter where you are in the world.
At Dublin Photography School we have taken our vast experience and knowledge with delivering premium photography courses and workshops, and are now bringing that experience to you online. Our trainers provide an online classroom, complete with interaction with fellow students and real time questions.
Our online classroom sessions cater for all levels (unless stated that they are level 1 or level 2) and they come complete with online access to downloadable E-Notes.
Level: All levels (unless stated that they are level 1 or level 2)
Course Frequency : This depends on the course you are signing up to.
Equipment Needed: Desktop, laptop, tablet of smartphone with Zoom
1 Day Photography Courses
We run a variety of one day courses (1oam to 5pm) that cover a number of photography genres. These course take place either at DPS HQ or at an offsite location.

Photography Workshops
We run a variety of photography workshops that cover specific genres of photography. These workshops take place either at DPS HQ or at an offsite location. Our workshops tend to be a shorter day than our one day courses and run anywhere from 4 to 5 hours depending on the workshop.

Outdoor Classrooms
Outdoor classrooms introduce you to the fundamentals of photography by combining both the theory and practical skills needed to get you started. You learn everything from what apertures, shutter speeds, ISO and equipment to use and how to best compose your photographs. These classrooms are a fantastic opportunity for photographers of all levels to get out and about shooting, while learning.We run a variety of outdoor classrooms that cover specific genres of photography.

Photography Talks
At DPS we run a series of FREE online photography talks called Thursday Talks . These lecture led talks are brought to you by a mix of in house tutors and guest speakers. They cover a wide variety of photography topics and geners. These free talks are brought to you via our online campus. You can escape into the wonderful world of photography, from the safety and comfort of your own home, and no matter where you are in the world. Our talks are always very popular and we run them on a first booked basis.
Level: All Levels
Photography Talk Frequency : Up to 4 times per year
Equipment Needed: Computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with Zoom
Photography Masterclasses
A photography masterclass is an intensive short class that will solely focus on a single topic/genre of photography. Step out of your comfort zone and master new techniques – from composition and lighting to semiotics and visual metaphors. These classes are lecture based, with a focus on refining work, showing samples of how, when and where to use techniques, as well as identifying and fine tuning work already produced.
Level: Experienced novices, experienced photographers, camera club members and students whoo have completed any of our level 1 courses DPS. All levels above beginner.
Class Frequency : There are 3 masterclasses scheduled for 2022

Photography Holidays
In 2013 we teamed up with Travel Department & TDactive to bring you a series of photography holidays to some of the most stunning photographic locations in the world.
